Summary

We are a school of more than 400 with 10% of the roll made up of international students from all parts of the globe. All our international students are boarders, and they live with the New Zealand students in one of our six houses. This gives all of the boarding houses a truly multi-national feel and also encourages our overseas students to make friends with the locals. English is spoken in all classes and in the houses, so our international students pick up language skills very quickly. Whanganui Collegiate School stands apart from other New Zealand schools for its traditional British-style boarding environment and the consistently high academic performance of students. We guarantee our international students a very warm welcome.

At Whanganui Collegiate School there is an expectation for excellence leading to our examination results being some of the best in the country. Our recent international graduates have gone on to study at universities in New Zealand, the USA, Australia and the UK as well as high ranking universities in the student’s home country.

We have young people from over 15 countries as part of our community. Our pastoral care is second to none.

Whanganui Collegiate School is a seven-day boarding school. Home stays are arranged for international students during the school holidays. Our impressive campus is guaranteed to make a lasting impression on visitors, with buildings old and new that reflect both the proud history of the School and the modern age. It is the ideal environment in which young people can live, study and enjoy their leisure time together in complete safety and harmony. Our English Language Centre is situated at the heart of the campus.

Our location and the facilities we offer combine to provide an ideal environment in which teenagers can grow. Although bricks and mortar do not make a great school, we are fortunate in the quality of our facilities.
The School is set on a 25 hectare site, of which 17 hectares are playing fields or open space. Central to the School is the Drive, the road which runs through the grounds and is well travelled every day by students and staff commuting between buildings.
The four original iconic Boarding Houses line one side and the expanse of the main field the other, divided by magnificent Pohutakawa trees. The School enjoys first-class facilities on site.

More about Whanganui Collegiate School

We are a team of six comprising of four ESOL teachers delivering English programmes from beginner level to NCEA Level 2, working alongside two International Directors that provide Guardianship and academic support to our students.

Learning English is the first major challenge for every student joining us from overseas. It allows them to study in mainstream academic classes, and to mix more freely with the New Zealand students. The ESOL team place students into mainstream as soon as they believe that they are ready. Regular testing and team meetings help inform discussions and decision making.

We aim to offer complete peace of mind to our international parents. We have very high expectations for our students helped by small class sizes which allows us to monitor progress very closely. We maintain regular contact with parents and agents and understand the importance of responding to concerns quickly and professionally. Academic tracking is done weekly, and any concerns reported as soon as possible.

As we are a genuine 7-day boarding school, our students are engaged not only during the week but also at the weekend. We have campus-wide wireless internet making it easy to keep in touch with family back home. We have an international student committee which represents the interests of our overseas students and arranges fun activities throughout the school year.
